A ledge that grabs your trucks is a ledge you can't skate. A few passes of wax changes that. Curb wax is the easiest upgrade a spot will ever get, and picking one is simple once you know what actually matters: size, shape, and how you'll carry it.
This guide covers what skate wax is, how to choose between pocket pieces and full blocks, how to apply it, and our quick picks, starting with Dime Bag Hardware Triple Slick, the wax our customers buy more than any other.
What Skateboard Wax Does
Skateboard wax, also called curb wax, is a block of wax you rub onto curbs, ledges, rails, and boxes. It fills in the rough texture of concrete and metal so your trucks and board slide instead of sticking. Most skate wax is paraffin based, the same family of wax used in candles, shaped and branded for skaters.
Wax affects how fast you lock into and slide out of grinds and slides. Too little and the edge grabs. Too much and it gets so slick that you shoot out faster than you expect. The goal is a smooth, even coat.
Size: Pocket Pieces vs. Full Blocks
This is the biggest choice. Small pieces ride in your pocket and are always on you. Big blocks last longer but usually live in your bag, or get left at the spot.
| Type | Examples | Best For | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pocket pieces | Dime Bag Triple Slick (2" x 2" x 5/8", 4 per pack), Spitfire Embers Mini (2.2" x 1.7" x 0.7") | Street skaters who roam from spot to spot | Each piece covers less ground, so multi-packs help |
| Breakaway bundles | Thunder Firecracker (130 g, splits into 4 sticks) | Crews who share wax | Pieces are small once you split them |
| Full blocks | Spitfire Bighead (approx. 3.5" x 2.5" x 1.5"), Zero Single Skull (4" x 4" x 1"), Baker Arch (5" x 3") | Waxing a lot of edges, home spots, DIY builds | Bulky to carry and easy to forget |
| Oversize shapes | Independent Kurb Killer (6 1/2" long) | Long ledges and curbs | Bag-only size |
Shape and Application
All wax does the same job, but shape changes how it feels in your hand and how evenly it goes on.
| Shape | Example | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Round | Bones Vato | Rolls and spreads smoothly for easy application |
| Recessed logo | Ace Rings | Ace designed the recesses to lay wax down evenly |
| Puck | Hockey Puck | Compact and sturdy, easy to grip |
| Small squares | Dime Bag Triple Slick | Fits in a pocket with room to spare |
Color, Scent, and Extras
Color is mostly style, but it has a practical side. Bright wax shows exactly where you've applied it. White blends in on light concrete and marble, while black is less noticeable on dark ledges and painted curbs. Options include Zero Single Skull White and Pig Pighead Black.
Scented wax keeps your bag from smelling like an old candle. Triple Slick comes in Blueberry, Apple, Cherry, and Lemon. Santa Cruz Classic Dot smells like coconut, and Santa Cruz Screaming Hand smells like bubble gum. Some waxes also include a sticker, such as Triple Slick, Zero, Bones Vato, and World Industries.
Choosing by Riding Style

| Skatepark and DIY | A full block that lasts through lots of edges | Spitfire Bighead, Zero Single Skull Glow, Independent Kurb Killer |
| Skating with a crew | Multi-packs or breakaway pieces to share | Triple Slick 4 Packs, Thunder Firecracker |
| Beginners | Easy application and a forgiving coat | Bones Vato, Pig Pighead |
How to Wax a Curb or Ledge
- Pick the edge you want to grind or slide, and brush off loose dirt and gravel.
- Rub the wax hard along the top corner and side of the edge until it starts to cake on.
- Grind the edge a few times to work the wax in. Reapply when it starts to feel grabby again.
Start with a thin coat and add more as needed. It's easier to add wax than to deal with a ledge that's too slick. Keep your wax out of hot cars and direct sun, since it softens in heat.
While you're keeping things fresh, don't forget your griptape. The Black Diamond Grip Cleaner + Wax Combo pairs a Black Diamond Dirt Remover with a Triple Slick 4 pack, so you can bring back your grip and wax your spot with one kit.

FAQ
What is skateboard wax made of?
Most skate wax is paraffin based. Some brands, like Zero and Bones, list paraffin wax specifically.
Can I use a regular candle instead?
In a pinch, yes. Candle wax and skate wax are close relatives. Skate wax is shaped to be easier to grip and rub into an edge.
How much wax should I put on?
Start with a thin, even coat and grind it in. Add more only when the edge starts to grab again.
Does wax work on rails?
Yes. Wax works on curbs, ledges, rails, and boxes.
Pocket wax or a big block?
If you skate street and move between spots, go pocket size so it's always on you. If you skate the same spots or a park, a full block lasts longer. Triple Slick 4 packs split the difference: small pieces, with backups.
